New Hamburg is a small hamlet within the Town of Poughkeespie, just about 80 miles north of NYC. The Main Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and is the smallest in area of the 62 Main Street Historic Districts on the Register. To say it is postcard perfect would not be an overstatement, the homes are immaculately cared for. New Hamburg began as a port community on the river and in fact, the New Hamburg Yacht Club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in the U.S. If you are looking for a Greek or Gothic Revival in a very sleepy town, this hamlet may be for you. It is certainly worth a visit, and when you do, check out Cafe Con Leche which recently moved from a tiny booth at the train station to a full service restaurant. The chef/owner is cooking up some excellent Puerto Rican food. Stop in for dinner or weekend brunch and see for yourself.
